Back in March I posted about a new addiction I had at the time - CrossFit.
Back when I posted, I'd been doing it about 2.5 months.
Back when I posted, I shared about how much I loved it, how much I loved the family-feeling at our gym, how much better I was feeling physically and mentally.
And back when I posted I hadn't lost any weight. After 2.5 months, 4 heavy duty, gasping for breath, sweat pouring off of you workouts a week. Week in and week out. And no weight loss. And I told myself that was ok, muscle weighs more than fat, your clothes are fitting better, be patient. yada, yada, yada. You know the drill...
I've had a love/hate relationship with the scale my entire life. More hate than love, but who's counting.
Fast forward to now. Almost 5.5 months into it. Yes, I'm still addicted. Even more so than before. Now 5 times a week. Week in and week out. Still love it!
I'm lifting weights now that I never could have even attempted when I started. Doing REAL man-style push ups (no knees), tonight I did a standing box jump that was 32" tall - standing still, flat footed and jumped up onto a 32" tall box! Lagging not too far behind those twenty somethings that at one time ran circles around me. You know something about those twenty somethings? They're old enough to be my kids.
I know what you're thinking/saying. Yah, but come on, after 5.5 months, any weight loss? Because after all, we're women. And everyone knows that regardless of how we look or how our clothes fit, we always look to the scale for confirmation that what we're doing is in fact working. Or not working.
The answer to that is yes. 10 pounds. 10 pounds that took almost 6 months to lose. Actually, that's not right. It's taken 2.5 months to lose 10 pounds - the first 3 months was nada. In fact, I gained that first 3 months. I've worked my tail off - literally and figuratively, and that's all my nemesis the scale has to show for it. 10 pounds.
Don't get me wrong! A pound is a pound, and I'll take every one of them I can get. But come on?! 6 months, 4-5 workouts a week, week in and week out, and scale - that's all you have to show for it? And in case you're wondering, I've been a stickler the last 3 months about what I eat, the amounts, the calories, the good carbs, lots of protein, minimal sugar, no soda, limited alcohol, etc.
But you know what's interesting? Clothes I was fitting nicely into when I was running 15-20 miles a week a year and a half ago - they're too big now. Baggy. And I weigh 10 pounds more now than I did back then.
You know what else is interesting? On Sunday I tried on a dress. One that I wore 17 years ago to the day -
And guess what. It fits. Again. 17 years later.
I'll be 44 in a few months. And I can now say I fit into a dress (albeit a pretty special one!) I wore when I was 26 years old.
I said it back when I posted in March and I'll say it again now - take THAT, damn scale!
And that my friends, that counts for progress in my book.
The progress isn't stopping here because I'm not stopping here - stay tuned!
