I went antiquing with my friend Karen yesterday; hit up quite a few new places (or new to us, at least). One of our favorites that we discovered back in December - Capital City Antiques.
When we were there in December, I picked up a gumball machine and put it to good use. You can read more about that project here.
Needless to say, I still had gumballs on the brain when we set out yesterday. Must have been in the cards, because I picked up another one. Loved it. Metal. Sturdy. A great minty/teal color. Sounds good, eh? Only one small problem....
Scooby Doo perched on the top. Hmm....
$19 - I bought it anyway, Scooby and all. (Maybe had something to do with the high I was still riding on after finding an awesome old globe earlier that day at the DI for only $3!, especially after seeing several more at the antique store for $25!)
The small 'cap' he's sitting on unscrews so the larger lid lifts off so you can add gumballs (or other interesting things you might add to a gumball machine besides the chewing variety).
I figured I could unscrew the metal Scooby cap, toss him aside and come up with something else to put on the top.
Brought it home and showed Nick and asked if he could figure out how we could make a top after I took Scooby off. He took one look at Scooby and said 'how about if we just unscrew those screws?'...
(Don't kid yourself, he said it with straight out sarcasm)
Ahhh. Have to say, I never thought to look underneath Scooby to see what options I had... 2 small screws holding him to the cap.

A few years ago I saw an old gumball machine filled with vintage white buttons (thought I had it pinned to Pinterest, but can't find it - if anyone has the link and will send it to me, I'd love to give credit thanks to Megan B who found the original link and sent it to me - you can see it here). I've been collecting vintage white buttons for years along with those I have from my grandmas and one of Nick's grandmas.
So I've filled the gumball machine with my collection of vintage white buttons -
It's about 2/3 full. Thought I had enough vintage whites to last a lifetime. Looks like it's time to start up the collecting again...
In the meantime, anyone looking for a metal Scooby, I just might be able to help you out ;)
