Picture 1000 Words Mini Book

  • Back_cover_sm
I made this book after signing up for one of Shimelle's online classes called 'A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words'. The premise behind the class was to create a mini book with 10 of your favorite photos to display on your coffee table. Your own design, your own photos, you pick the product you use and the book you use - you get the drift. Covering page after page after page of this chipboard album was the impetus for creating our Background Covered Chipboard Albums.

Sewing

  • Bird_book_2
I'll be the first to admit that I have to be the most impatient sewer ever! 30 minutes into a project, I want it done. So, don't look too closely at any of my projects, that impatient traight of mine often shows itself in the *quality* of the sewing!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

It's spring in Utah, and that means only one thing for our family.  Baseball.

Both boys are playing.  That means Monday through Saturday full of baseball.  That means games, practices, more games, practices and more games.  Every once in a while their games are on the same night.  At the same time.  In different locations.  And one of us is out of town.  THAT gets a little tricky, but it's only happened once or twice this season.  Most of the time their games are on different nights.  When they're on the same night, one is usually early (5-6:30) and the other late (6:30 to 8).  They make for LONG days for all of us, but the boys certainly sleep well this time of year!

I was finally able to get some pictures at their games this week.

Jack had a GREAT game last night!  Their team (the Mets) won 13 to 'something less than 13' (it gets hard to keep track, but it was less, that much I know!)  He scored the run that clinched their win with a slide into home.
Jack_hit_sm_2 I This was the hit - Jack, the on deck batter and the catcher are all staring at the ball as it sails high over the head of the 2nd baseman.

Jack_on_base_sm_3 The look on this face standing at 1st base is priceless.  You can just see the pride in his face.  That paired with the right fielder behind him, obviously bummed that they missed the play!  (caution, proud mommy coming out)

Jack_slide_sm And the best one of all, Jack stealing home, sliding with the ball right at his back.  If you know Jack, you know that sliding into home for him is a BIG deal.  He's always struggled at sliding.  The rule in the league is that you can start stealing home halfway through the season, but you HAVE to slide (for safety reasons) or it's an automatic out.  And all slides have to be feet first, also for safety (as opposed to sliding arms first, on your stomach like they do in the big leagues).  That's a scary thing for some of the boys, knowing that they have to slide into home.  He still needs a little work on his slides, but he's made huge improvements over last year.  HUGE.

Here are some shots of Sam's game earlier this week

Sam_gloves_sm One of his cousins is also on the team.  And 2 of his second cousins.  And Nick's cousin is the coach (dad of said 2nd cousins).  They had to get creative with the names on the back of the jerseys with so many related kids on the team!

That's eye black on his face.  Meant to help keep the sun out of their eyes.  Coach likes to put it on the kids because they think it's fun, makes them feel grown up.

Incidentally, eye black is not easy to get off.  I've tried many things.  Many that have left Sam begging me to stop!  If you ever find yourself with eye black on your face, try a little vaseline.  Works like a charm.Sam_catcher_sm_2Catcher is Sam's LEAST favorite position to play.  Last year he was playing catcher and the ball took a bad bounce and managed to work it's way through all of the padding and hit in a bad place, if you know what I mean!  (Not that THAT's a bad place, but you get my drift...).  Poor guy, now when he plays catcher he always trys to sit about 10 feet behind the batter...

Snack_shack After the game is over and after the coach talks with the kids about the game, they run sprint to the snack shack for treats.  Boy, you should see them run!  If they put as much energy running bases as they do into getting 1st in line to the snack shack, we'd surely be undefeated...

Speaking of 'take me out to the ballgame', tomorrow the Jazz are playing the Lakers in game 4 of the NBA playoffs.  We'll be there!  The boys have their official Jazz jerseys laid out and ready to go.  We'll be doing Mother's Day Brunch and one of Nick's sisters house with the family and then head to the game from there.

GO JAZZ!

And Happy Mother's Day!

Thanks for playing everyone!  Remember, Liberty begins shipping to stores May 15th, so keep your eyes peeled!

Lust

Don't worry, it won't be necessary to shoo the kiddies from the room for this one.

This afternoon I was driving the boys home and Jack (he's 10) says to me,

"Mom, what does lust mean"?

"Uh, um, well.  Why"?

"What does it mean"?

(After much thought on my part) "It's kind of an adult word, Jack".

"What does it mean"?

(After much more thought on my part) "It means to want something".

"Oh, that's what I thought".

"Oh,  that's what you thought.  Why do you ask, Jack?  Where did you hear it"?

"I heard it in one of my songs".

(Oh crap).  "Which one"?

"It's on my Pirates of the Caribbean cd.  You know, lust for gold".

WHEW.

I know we need to start THOSE conversations with him one day, I just wasn't mentally prepared for it.  Or verbally prepared for it, to say the least...

So I was telling my mother in law about it tonight at Sam's baseball game.  She's a retired teacher.  She suggested next time I ask him to use the word in a sentence before I answer.  Smart lady, she is!

So I was telling Nick about it tonight after Sam's baseball game.  He suggested next time I ask him to use the word in a sentence before I answer.  Smart guy he is.

Why didn't I think of that?!

Without Further Ado...

Well, mabye a little more 'ado' before I show Liberty.  And what the heck does ado mean, anyway?!  (Thanks to Wendy S for the following explanation!  "It is actually 'without further adieu' (coming from French) which I think loosely translates to 'without further delay'").

Have I mentioned here that we'll be releasing a new mini line every 4-8 weeks this year?  The mini lines we've released up until this point have done so well for us and have been so well received by stores and consumers alike that we made a decision at the end of last year to do small releases throughout the year.

Stores have told us that they LOVE this because they can consistently bring in new, small lines from Scenic Route to refresh their inventory between shows and major releases.  And we KNOW you guys LOVE it - always something new!  And small lines at an affordable price, so you can afford to buy the entire line and not feel guilty about doing it.

Don't worry, we'll continue to release larger lines at both CHA shows, our mini line releases are just a little something to tide you over between shows.

So NOW, without further ado, here's Liberty!

Srk997_liberty_collection_wrong_bar Bold stars and stripes combined with vibrant reds, blues and a punch of golden yellow create the patriotic palette of Liberty!  This 4th of July themed mini-line with coordinating stamps, die cuts, buttons, stickers and chipboard is just what you need for capturing those 'all American' memories this summer season.

Liberty has 6 double-sided papers, buttons, chipboard, stickers, die cuts a new clear stamp and a Product Kit.

Click on any of the images for a larger view.

Now, Liberty is obviously a 4th of July themed line.  The best thing about it - the papers can be used for TONS of other things besides the 4th.  Think baseball, think military, think boys, think international flags - you name it!

Srt996_b_liberty_button_backer_crop Src994_liberty_chipboard_cropped_2 Srs993_liberty_stickers_cropped_2 We'll be shipping Liberty beginning May 15th, so it's just around the corner!

Any residents of Liberty, Missouri out there?  That's where the name Liberty comes from.  The papers within the line are named after different streets in Liberty, Missouri.  The street names Sarah used are named after different US presidents - kind of fun!

So You Say You're Not a Surfer?

You would think I went surfing while I was in California based on that title, no?

No.  I was landlocked.  No ocean in sight.  And apparently my brain was locked as well while I was there.  I took lots of photos, lots.  I was all prepared to write about my trip tonight, but when I went to add photos I discovered that they're not on my camera.  I was at my Dad's and copied the photos to his hard drive for him, or so I thought.  Looks like I MOVED all but a few of them instead.  DUH.  You'd never guess I was in the IT field for 8 years...

Laney_and_papa So, here's ONE of the photos still on my camera from my weekend - my cute grandpa with my cute sister.

Still wondering how the surfing title fits in?  It does, I promise.

Sr950_a_grafton_laxton_ave Sr964_a_grafton_scrap_strip_3

Ties in with our Grafton line, specifically these 2 papers.  I've heard quite a few people say "I don't know how I'd use this paper, I'm in a landlocked state OR we don't go to the beach OR no one in our family surfs OR, OR, OR..."

Hello_surfboard_flower_card
So you say you're not a surfer?  Think again!

I made this card back in March to take with me to a few events to show people how to use those papers for something other than surfing/beach pics.

I cut the surfboards out of the paper and created flower petals.  Easy!

Now you can say you're a surfer, even if you use your board for something OTHER than surfing!

Wanted to mention a few things coming up -

A Quick Trip & a Chat

I'm headed to California tomorrow for a long weekend with my Dad's side of the family.  There aren't many of us - my dad, his wife, my sister, my grandpa and my 2 uncles.  My grandma passed away 2 summers ago while I was in Australia.  We had a small get together late that summer celebrating her life, and now we're getting together this weekend to spread her ashes in a special place my dad has spent 2 years looking for.

Looking forward to spending time with everyone, especially my Grandpa.  He's getting along in years and the time we have to spend with him is limited.  Meeting my sister tomorrow at the airport, she's flying in from South Dakota then we're flying from here together.

While I'm there I'll be doing an online chat on Saturday at www.serendipityscrapbooks.com at 3:00 pm PT as part of their Mad Hatter Tea Party Crop.  I enjoy doing online chats, gives me a chance to meet and connect with so many different people.  They asked me to create a card sketch for their weekend crop and then a card based on the sketch.  That was tough!  I'm used to just creating on the fly - sometimes I try to sketch first, but when I do the sketch rarely looks anything like what I end up with!

So how about you?  Do you sketch before you create?  If not, what's your process?

Here's the sketch I sent them - Card_sketch_copy_2

and the card I created based on the sketch.  Card_for_card_sketch_4

If you have time to drop in on Saturday at 3 pm PT, stop by and say hi - click here to join in!

A Peek & a Giveaway

Good_friends_sneak_2 Finished this up over the weekend.  A Friendship mini book we'll be teaching in The Netherlands and England in June at Scrap-a-ganza and then a bunch more times throughout the year.  I used one of our new covered chipboard albums, they're great for classes because you don't have to take the time to cover the pages in class since they're already covered - love that!  Also used some papers, stickers and die cuts from our Providence line.  The colors in this line make me so happy, so fun and bright!

See that fun yellow polka dot paper ribbon thing at the bottom of the minibook?  I've been playing with a machine and some dies from Accucut over the last week.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this new ribbon die they came out with at CHA!   Can't tell you how many different 'ribbons' I cut using different patterns of paper.  They add such a fun finishing touch to things.  Sarah just designed a layout for the class we're teaching at CKU Provo later this summer using the same die and one of our black and white polka dot papers.  Super fun!

A lot of scrapbook stores have Accucut machines and dies for their customers to use.  Next time you're in your LSS, check to see if they have this new ribbon die.  If so, spend a few minutes cutting some fun, inexpensive embellishments!

Speaking of fun, It's been a while since I've done a giveaway, so how 'bout one now?  Here's the deal -

Leave a comment on this post between now and end of day Friday the 25th.  On Saturday I'll draw 4 random names - 2 will win a class kit for the Friendship book shown above (including step by step instructions and photos of the project).  The other two will win a bag full of pieces cut from the ribbon die, this bird die and this flourish die using a bunch of different Scenic Route papers.

Good luck!

(EDITED TO ADD - I've had so many people email me asking if we'll be teaching this class in their area.  Here's a link to our website with our teaching calendar so far for the rest of the year.)

Oh yeah, one more thing.  I shared a peek of our newest mini line - Liberty - today in our wholesale email newsletter.  Stay tuned next week for peeks here!  Don't worry, you won't have to wait long to have it in your hot little hands, it begins shipping to stores early May....

Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific

Shamp_2 Remember that shampoo a long time ago called "Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific"?  It was a big hit in the 70's.  I loved the smell of that shampoo.  And yes, I realize I'm dating myself by bringing this up...

Remember the commercial?  A pretty blond with long curly hair swinging her head back and forth.  You could almost smell her hair through the tv.  Almost.

Remember the part of the commercial that showed one of the blond's friends replicating herself over and over and over again?  And the announcer that said "and they'll tell two friends and so on and so on and so on..."?

What does this have to do with anything?  Bear with me.  My brain works in really weird ways.  (yes, I know you're nodding your head after reading this and thinking to yourself 'amen, sista').

I was blog hopping a few weeks back (don't get me started on that, I could do it for days on end).  I think I started at the Pink Paislee blog, then I linked to the blog of one of their design team members and it took me to someone else's blog and so on and so on and so on (see, I told you the Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific reference would make sense.  Or not.) and I eventually made my way to the Studio Calico blog

And now, you can say you've experienced your first Layler ... (definition to be found here)

There really is a point to this post and I'm going to get to it now before I lose the few of you that have stuck with me to this point and are still following along.

April_2 While I was on their blog, I saw this layout by April Foster, the Creative Director for Studio Calico.

Kauai_08_2After being inspired by April's layout, I made this one a few weekends ago. Truth be told, I should probably say 'lifted' vs. 'inspired', because that's pretty much what I did.  And I'm not ashamed to say it, I liked her design that much.  I used our Label Rub-ons to frame some of the photos from our trip to Hawaii and some stickers from our Grafton line.

OK, to be truthful I spent about an hour on the Studio Calico blog and then on their site that night.  If you're looking for inspiration (or flat out 'lifts' with proper credit due, of course), there's a TON to be had there.

By the way, you can STILL buy Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific shampoo  here.  At a whopping $14.95 a bottle for a shampoo you could once buy at the grocery store, looks like gas isn't the only commodity going through the roof these days.  I certainly didn't do the grocery shopping back in the mid 70's (come on, I'm getting old but not THAT old) so I'm not sure how much a bottle of this stuff ran you back then, but I can pretty much guarantee it wasn't $14.95.

Chasing Penguins

I love music.  All kinds.  Well, almost all kinds.  I really don't do country, unless it's Garth Brooks or The Daisy Chicks.  And I really don't do rap.  Other than that, it's all kinds.

Given a choice, I'd rather have music on than the tv.  I hate tv as background noise.  Really disturbs me.

But back to the music.  And the penguins.

I'm always looking for new music (and always looking for recommendations, so if you have any I'd love to hear them).  On any given day you can find several scraps of paper in my car with the name of a song or an artist scrawled on it that I heard while listening to the radio.   Listening while writing.  Scrawling while driving.

Like the other day.  I heard a song called Chasing Penguins.  Or so I thought.  That's what happens when I try to multi task and do 2 things at once.  Or 3 in this case - drive, listen and write.  Luckily I also wrote down the name of the artist when I wrote down what I thought was the name of the song.  Turns out it wasn't Chasing Penguins.  It was Chasing Pavements.  A much better name for a song if you ask me.  After all, what kind of song would be about chasing penguins?  And where would you chase them?  At the zoo?  The North Pole?  Who finds themselves at the North Pole, chasing penguins, no less?

But back to the song.   Chasing Pavements by Adele (I've linked to the song in Amazon since you can't link to specifics in iTunes.  Looks like iTunes has the exclusive to her album called 19 right now until June.  So if you really like it/her, pick it up on iTunes..).  She reminds me of a few different artists blended together.  The easiest way for me to describe her voice and her style is she sings the kind of music they play on Greys Anatomy.  So if you like Greys Anatomy type music, check her out on iTunes.  (Speaking of Greys Anatomy, as of this Thursday the dry spell is over.  New episodes.  Yee hah!  And since I'm speaking of Grey's Anatomy now, there's a really cool website here.  It's a blog by the writers of Grey's Anatomy, fun to read after each episode, if you're into Grey's Anatomy).

Um, yeah.  Really off track now.  Back to the song.  If you're searching for it, remember, when you search it's Pavements, not Penguins....  And if you listen, let me know what you think.

Bueller, Bueller....?

Loved this movie.

If you know the movie, you know the line.

If not, it would take me a while to explain, and then I'd ramble, and then it would turn into what my close friends and family have affectionately dubbed a 'layler' - a story that goes on and on and on with no point at all.  Told by moi.  So I'll spare you today from a 'layler'.  BUT, if you've been following my blog for a while, you know what they are - the 'laylers'.  Because I tend to do them a lot here.  (see, one's starting now.  time to cut it off before it gets out of hand...)

Anyway, the point of this post is that I'm here.  Yes, still here.

Busy week preparing for the Scrapbook USA Expo here tomorrow and Saturday.  It's one of the crazier expo's - it starts and 9 am tomorrow and runs until midnight.  Yes, midnight.  LONG DAY.

I'll be back in full force starting on Monday.

Back next week, sans the 'layler'.

Thank You

0_kitty_p_2_edit Thank you so much for your posts, I can't tell you how much it means to me.

Kitty P died in her sleep last night in her favorite spot, our closet.  Nick was able to bring her home on Friday afternoon where he and the boys were able to love her and comfort her.  I'm so sad that I wasn't able to be with her before she died, but I'm happy she was home where she belonged and died in her sleep.

My sweet sister searched her computer for hours looking for a picture of P and found one - thank you Laney.

It's Been a Tough Day

Today we found out that our cat is in kidney failure.

The cat I've had since college.  17 years.  Her name is 'P'.  Short for Kitty P.  Short for Poofy (long story about how that name came to be, but you can imagine why we call her 'P' now instead of Poofy...)

The cat that the boys have known their whole lives.  The cat that I've known longer than my husband.  The cat that I can't find a picture of now for the life of me.  How can I have had her for this long and I can't find a picture?  I've been looking for over an hour.  I have to have at least one somewhere in the 10's of thousands of photos that I have.  But I can't find any, not one lousy one.

To make a very long story short, we took her to the vet today because she hasn't been herself and we found out she's in kidney failure.  They're keeping her for a few days to see if an IV helps.  The prognosis doesn't look good, her enzyme levels were off the charts.  I went to see her tonight to check in and see how she's doing.  She's scared to death.

We sat the boys down tonight and tried to explain to them what's going on.  I think Jack understands it a bit more than Sam does.   When I put Sam to bed tonight, he asked if P dies if we can hang her in the living room so we'll always remember her - his little 7 year old mind is so sweet and innocent.  Nick told him that if she dies we'll most likely cremate her - too much information for the little guy.  He started crying and said he didn't want her to be ashed.  He then asked if we could put her in a big frame so that he could keep her in his room.  I assumed he meant a photo of her, he meant 'her'.

One of Nick's sisters gave us a book years ago called Cat Heaven.  It's a happy book with beautiful illustrations about where cats go when they die.  I read it to Sam tonight and it really seemed to help him feel better thinking P might die (although it left me choking back the tears).  After reading it, he asked if we could cut some of her fur that he could keep to remember her.

Tomorrow early morning I'm headed to Calgary for the next 4 days for work.  Makes it tough to go with all that's going on.

I know not everyone is a cat person.  I wasn't.  I had dogs the entire time I was growing up.  But we're cat people by default now since we've had her for so long.  So if you're a cat person, please think positive thoughts for her.  And if you're not a cat person, think positive thoughts for her anyway  :)

And if you have a pet that you haven't taken any pictures of because you don't scrap 'that way', take some as soon as it's light enough.  Even if you don't scrap them.

Bye Bye Stinky Trees

29574313Do you know what I'm talking about?

The tree air fresheners.  The ones that come free with the $10 carwash.

For the most part, I think they're stinky.  For the most part, they're better than the smell in the car though, especially when it's baseball season in our world.  And when it's baseball season and you have 2 boys playing, sometimes anything is better than stinky baseball bags...even stinky trees.

It's time to say bye bye to the stinky trees.

This weekend we made our own air fresheners!

Img_5052_edit_2We had a few friends over on Saturday night with their kids.  While the men were drinking scotch after dinner and talking about one sport or another, the ladies had the kids crafting away making air fresheners. They all loved it, even the boys.  Super simple to make and they smell oh so yummy. We took different pre-cut chipboard pieces (Scenic Route and Bazzill), coated  one side with drops of essential oils (concentrated plant oils like peppermint, lavendar, eucalyptus, tea tree, bergamot), let dry and then covered the other side with patterned paper.  The kids went a little crazy on theirs and added Ice Stickles.  LOTS of ice stickles...

Img_5060_edit Now instead of stinky trees, we have nice smelling birds and butterflies and ovals and tags and headless people (don't worry, we don't sell them headless!  the people come with heads, but we didn't use them for the air fresheners since there wasn't an easy way to attach).   When we were done, I used a japanese screw punch to punch a hole in each one and added a little ribbon so they can hang in the car.  They also work great as drawer sachets, closet fresheners, even stinky boy baseball bag fresheners.

If you have kids, this makes a fun, easy, inexpensive project to have them do for their grandmas for Mother's Day next month.

And like I said, sure beats the stinky trees....

They're Here, They're Here

(as opposed to my last I'm Here, I'm Here post...)

Our new rub-ons (the 1st 8 shown when you click on the link) arrived in the warehouse earlier this week.

Finally!

They've been LONG awaited.  And now they're here.  We started shipping them this week, so if you've been on the lookout for them, you should be able to find them starting within the next 1-2 weeks.

Put together a few projects tonight using them.

Theyre_together I used our new Days of the Week rub-ons on this layout.  This is one of my favorites of our rub-ons.  They'd be perfect for a 'week in the life' mini book with the days of the week.  Used our new Man stamp too.  I normally use Black Staz-on when I stamp, but when I was with Vicki last weekend she said she uses Ranger's Jet Black Archival Ink so I thought I'd buy it and give it a try.  Used it here.  HOLY MOLY, I'm a convert.  Can't believe the coverage.  Only had to stamp once.  Didn't have to fill in with a black pen like I usually do.  If you're looking for a good black ink for stamping, I definitely recommend it!

Jack, my 10 year old has been watching the progress on this layout as I've been making it tonight.  He just looked at it and told me that now that it's done the part with the black paper looks a little plain and thinks I need to add something there to jazz it up a bit...  :)

Img_5039_edit Made this card using the new Flower1 rub-ons and the Sentiments2 rub-ons.    The colors on the flower rub-ons make me happy.  They're so vibrant!  We released the Sentiments2 rub-ons last summer, they're still one of my faves.  Great for making quick cards.

I learned one of the best 'duh, why didn't I think of that' tips in Canada last week.

Rub_on_stapled

I've shared my 'scotch tape gets off errant rub-ons' tip here before.  This new tip also has to do with rub-ons.  You know the backer sheet that protects the rub-ons?  You know when you cut the rub-on out before you apply it so you don't get the rest of the rub-ons on the sheet onto your project?  You know after you do that and the backer sheet separates from the rub-ons and some of your rub-ons end up getting ruined because the backer sheet is cut too and after its cut it NEVER matches up again with the rub-ons?  Staple the rub-ons to the backer sheet BEFORE you cut.  Voila - the backer sheet is always attached to the rub-on sheet in the exact right place so they stay together and the backer sheet ends up protecting the rub-ons like it's meant to do.  If you store them flat, you don't even have to put them back in the bag this way!

DUH.  Now why didn't I think of that....
